4.4 Maintain student safety

Describe strategies that support students’ wellbeing and safety working within school and/or system, curriculum and legislative requirements.

All teacher have a Duty of Care to students, this extends from before school to after school and encompasses camps and excursions.

This Duty of Care also extends to student wellbeing, during my placement at Leopold Primary school as part of the morning routine we had a greeting circle to ensure that each member of the class felt heard and present in the classroom and had the opportunity to express any thoughts and feelings or issues they were having.

Yard duty is ofcourse another curcial area, often in free time students engage in a level of risky play that can lead to injury or simply to finding themselves in a tricky situation. On one yard duty it became apparent that a child had climbed to the top of a climbing wall for the first time and could not navigate how to get down. I was able to instruct the child where to place their feet and they were successfully able to climb down the wall without injury.
