2.5 Literacy and numeracy strategies

Know and understand literacy and numeracy teaching strategies and their application in teaching areas.

Identified by the curriculum as key areas that underpin all other learning areas. Literacy and Numeracy are the base skills that we strive for all students to understand on a deep level to be successful in the Australian schooling system and to be lifelong learners and effective members of society.

I believe that a core strategy for literacy and numeracy is engagement. If a student is interested in the work being done and enjoying the learning process the pathways to learning will be more easily accessible.

With that in mind, I designed a literacy unit from grade P/1/2 that engaged students through selecting a mystery object from a treasure box as a writing seed, I then modelled how to write from these seeds on two separate days to demonstrate how the story can change and students then wrote their own stories on a  fairy tale template.

An example of a numeracy strategy that I believe to be very effective is using hands-on manipulatives, in the below lesson students were working on probability and the chances of drawing a different colour block from a bag.
